Join Dr. Jay Mager of Ohio Northern Univ. and Brooks Wade of Jocassee Wild for an exciting week of studying loons on beautiful Lake Jocassee in South Carolina!
After five years of study of the winter behavior of Common Loons on Lake Jocassee - the first ever study of Common Loons in winter in a freshwater habitat - the research is expanding this year to the study of loons in spring migration as they use Lake Jocassee as a significant stop-over lake on their way to their summer breeding lakes. It is not uncommon to witness hundreds of loons depart en masse at first light on spring mornings, and is surely one of the grandest natural history phenomena to observe in this part of the world.
Lake Jocassee is a gorgeous reservoir that is fed by several rivers. The major basin of the lake is over 150’ deep, while it is much shallower up the rivers. There are numerous waterfalls to explore, which are shelter to Oconee Bells, an unique wildflower that blooms in early spring.
This study is a fantastic opportunity to observe a multitude of migrating loons, learn about their different feeding strategies, and see their transition to the summer breeding plumage. Additionally, you will see a variety of other wildlife in between watching loons, including eagles, otters, grebes, and more!
