Lake Jocassee Wintering Loon Research - Week 1

  • Lake Jocasee & Devil's Fork State Park 161 Holcombe Circle Salem, SC, 29676 United States (map)

Join Dr. Jay Mager of Ohio Northern Univ. and Brooks Wade of Jocassee Wild for an exciting week of studying the 100+ loons wintering on beautiful Lake Jocassee in South Carolina!

Lake Jocassee is a gorgeous reservoir that is fed by several rivers. The major basin of the lake is over 150’ deep, while it is much shallower up the rivers. There are numerous waterfalls to explore, which are shelter to Oconee Bells, an unique wildflower that blooms in early spring.

About 150 loons winter on this 7500+ acre reservoir, along with Bonaparte’s gulls and horned grebes. It also serves as a stopover site for loons migrating in the spring back to their breeding grounds further north.

This study is a fantastic opportunity to observe loons during the wintering months, learn about their different feeding strategies, and see their transition to the summer breeding plumage. Additionally, you will see a variety of other wildlife in between watching loons, including eagles, otters, grebes, and more!
